R. Nelson Parrish

R. Nelson Parrish is a multi-disciplinary fine artist, investigating the expansion and contraction of time in his fine art. His internationally-recognized practice fluidly moves across mediums and materials, focusing on Bio-resin and reclaimed wood. Parrish actualizes his works the same way a musician or actor moves between instruments and roles: immersed in the moment and highly dedicated to craft. While clearly sculptural, and less painterly, the pieces are captured like a photographer: a moment in time, the capturing of movement, time and place.

Parrish is a dreamer. His works translate visceral and ephemeral moments into the tangible. These heightened experiences that are simultaneously calming and chaotic, are also definitively poetic and memorable. Each piece presents an opportunity to slow time, inviting the viewer to awaken a new lens in which to experience the world.

Inspiration comes from the simple timeless moments – timeless, as in when we are forced to stop and appreciate them: snow drifts whishing along a ridge line, light glinting and refracting the branches, the sound of water. Historically, these moments have been translated as the deconstructed sublime or minimalist Zen. For Parrish, they are these moments where you just have to stop and stare. Your mind wanders to another place. Time slips. You take a breath. Pause. Then walk away down the trail, knowing that that moments was yours.
